Child Care Centers & Type-A Home Provider Courses
Sections 5101:2-12-27  and 5101:2-13-27 of the Ohio Administrative Code for Child Care Centers and Type A Homes, respectively, require that during operating hours there shall at least one staff member who has successfully completed current and valid training in First Aid and management of Communicable Disease, and Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention.  The Germ Patrol offers both the initial courses required by the OAC as well as follow-up 3-hour review courses that are required every 3 years.  Prior to each class, The Germ Patrol checks for changes to the ORC and the OAC (rules and forms) to ensure that your students receive the most current information that is available in class as well as on the handout material provided.

Communicable Disease

Changes to Communicable Disease requirements have been quite frequent over the past 3 years and, as a result, The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and the Ohio Department of Education completely revised their training material in mid-2009.  The Germ Patrol offers both the initial 6-hour training and the 3-hour review class.

The 6-hour Communicable Disease training provides information to child care providers about how disease is spread, prevention and control, management of the ill child, Child Care Center health policies, children with special needs, common illnesses in the Child Care Center, and Communicable Diseases and readmittance criteria.

The 3-hour review course covers much of the same material, but as a review.  It includes how the disease is spread, prevention and control, emphasis on health and safety issues, management of the ill child, medication policies, and review of Communicable Diseases.

The curriculum is based upon Caring for Our Children, National Health and Safety Performance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care and Infectious Disease Control Manual, and is produced by the ODH.

Child Abuse Recognition & Prevention
While not as frequent as those in Communicable Disease, theyre are a number of new items related to Child Abuse Recognition & Prevention, the most signicant of which deals with the Criminal Background Checks (both BCI and FBI checks).  Other items that are new to Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention and are covered in our courses are Ohio's Safe Haven Law, Claire's Law (shaken baby syndrome education), and HB 111, which is now in the Ohio Senate, that wants to drastically expand the definition of Neglect.

Our 6-hour course also includes training on prevention of Child Abuse in your Child Care Center or Type A Home, Ohio Child Abuse Law, reporting Abuse (suspected or observed), physical and behavioral indicators of Abuse, facts about victims and abusers, history of child abuse legislation, how to report (to whom and when), invstigating role of Child Protective Service Agencies, and proper sharing of information between regulatory agencies.

In addition to the items mentioned in the first paragraph, our 3-hour course covers Ohio Law, Child Abuse, overview of important topics, physical and behavioral indicators of abuse, review of Children's Protective Agency, Child Abuse scenarios, and prevention of abuse in your Child Care Center or Type A Home.

Pediatric First Aid

PedFACTs is a 4-hour curriculum designed specifically for Child Care providers and teachers.  It is an entirely pediatric-centered First Aid Course, originated from American Academy of Pediatrics in response to requests for more pediatric-centered First Aid.  It was accepted by ODJFS in July 2006 as an approved First Aid Curriculum.  PedFACTs certification is good for two (2) years.

PedFACTs is fast-paced and is taught as group interaction class with fun exercises, games. using education materials such as books, DVD’s, peer stories, and demonstrations.

During the course, the students are introduced to 15 separate First Aid topics, each of which is divided into 3 areas:
